Basher

Python syntax, native speed. Write Python, get a native Windows program that runs as fast as hand-written C, 7–57× faster than CPython. No type annotations: Basher works out every type when it compiles.

Code

It reads like Python. It runs like C.

def fib(n):
    if n < 2:
        return n
    return fib(n - 1) + fib(n - 2)

print(f"fib(35) = {fib(35)}")

$ basher run fib.bsh            # 31 ms. CPython: 1494 ms
fib(35) = 9227465
$ basher build fib.bsh -o fib   # a standalone fib.exe

Features

Everything you need to ship a program.

01Language

Python syntax

Functions, classes, lists, dicts, sets, tuples, f-strings, comprehensions, lambdas, exceptions, generators. If you know Python, you know Basher.

02Speed

Native speed

Compiles through C with clang -O3. Benchmarks run as fast as hand-written C, and 7–57× faster than CPython 3.14.

03Types

Types inferred

No annotations. Every type is worked out at compile time, and mistakes are compile errors with the line and a hint.

04Ship it

Real .exe files

basher build makes a standalone program: --static for no DLLs, --windowed for GUI apps.

05Libraries

Windows, GPU, more

Real Win32 windows, dialogs, notifications, a GPU canvas and headless testing. See the libraries; install one with basher install gui.

06Tools

Editor + updates

A VS Code extension (highlighting, errors as you type, hover types) and basher update, which checks every download's sha256.

Download

Every file with its sha256, machine-readable: esorlex.com/libary/basher · older versions are listed there too.

Install

Four steps, about a minute.

  1. Download setup.exe and run it. It isn't code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen may say "unknown publisher": choose More info → Run anyway. No admin rights needed.
  2. Answer its questions (Enter takes the default): install folder, add Basher to your PATH, open .bsh files with Basher, the VS Code extension.
  3. The C compiler. Basher builds through clang. Setup checks for it and, if it's missing, offers to install LLVM and the Microsoft C++ Build Tools with winget. You see and accept their licenses yourself.
  4. Open a new terminal and run basher run hello.bsh (the examples are in the install folder under docs\examples). Later, basher update gets the newest version.

System requirements

Any recent 64-bit Windows PC.

Changelog

What's new.

1.3.0 · 2026-10-26

  • Public release: setup.exe, a portable zip and the VS Code extension, downloadable here with their sha256.
  • basher update: https only, the download's size and sha256 must match, keeps your PATH and editor settings, puts the old version back if anything fails. --check only looks.
  • Installed copies check once a day and print one line when a new version is out (basher update --off turns it off).

1.2.0 – 1.2.1 · 2026-10-26

  • The canvas library: GPU drawing (Direct2D), text, pictures, mouse and keys, headless frames for tests.
  • os.path.getmtime and time.strftime; faster gui windows.

1.1.0 – 1.1.1 · 2026-10-25

  • Libraries: basher install / uninstall / libraries, every file checked against its sha256. gui, dialogs, notify, horseman.
  • Arguments evaluate left to right like Python; f-string digit separators; basher build --windowed.

1.0.0 – 1.0.1 · 2026-10-24
